About Us

TessArae® was founded to develop and commercialize comprehensive differential diagnostic technology for the detection of infectious disease agents.

TessArae’s TessArray® RPM (Resequencing Pathogen Microarray) technology simultaneously detects and identifies numerous pathogens from clinical and environmental samples, enabling characterization of multiple co-infecting pathogens and elucidation of novel sequence variants, all in a same day, single sample, multiple result test.

Management Team

  • Klaus Schafer, MD, MPH President and CEO

Klaus Schafer holds MD (Iowa, 1977) and MPH (UTX-HSC, 1984) degrees. Dr. Schafer was a career officer in the USAF, retiring as Assistant AF Surgeon for Readiness, Science and Technology at rank of Brigadier General. In 2004-2005 Schafer also served as Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for the Chemical and Biological Defense Program. Dr. Schafer provided a leadership role for AF and DoD entry into electronic medical records and telemedicine, genomic tools for diagnostics and surveillance, and information technology for biodefense.

Clark Tibbetts, PhD, EVP and CTO

Clark Tibbetts holds BA in Chemistry (Amherst College, 1968) and PhD in Biophysics and Chemistry (Caltech, 1972). His research has been supported by NCI and NHGRI, leading to novel DNA-based applications and technologies, applied in molecular virology (Postdoc, Wallenberg Laboratory, Uppsala, Sweden) and for tumor virus genetics and human genomics (University of Connecticut Health Center, Vanderbilt University). From 1997 Dr. Tibbetts spent five years starting academic enterprise institutes for bioinformatics and biotechnology at George Mason University and Virginia Tech. During these years he was also advisor to both Department of Energy and NIH Genome Programs, serving consecutive terms on the National Genome Research Review Committee. From 2002 – 2005 Tibbetts served in the Department of Defense, establishing a synergistic network of government, academic and industrial scientists and engineers, leading to development and validation of the resequencing pathogen microarray (RPM) platform for public health and biodefense surveillance. In 2005 Tibbetts founded Tessarae, LLC and was joined soon afterwards by Klaus Schafer as co-founder.

Matthew Lorence, PhD, MBA, Vice President, Marketing and Sales

Matthew Lorence holds a PhD in Molecular Biology (University of Texas at Dallas) and an MBA in Marketing Management (UTD, 1989). After a productive NIH postdoctoral research fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas culminating in 13 peer-reviewed publications, he held numerous marketing and business development positions in the biotechnology tools and molecular diagnostics industry with Bio-Rad, Applied Biosystems, and most recently with Affymetrix, focusing on the development of applications in microbiology, infectious disease, and biodefense.
